EXAMINATION OF THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE ENDBADGOVERNANCE PROTEST IN NIGERIA ( A CASE STUDY OF UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS)

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Social media has become a pivotal tool for mobilizing and organizing protests globally. In Nigeria, the EndBadGovernance protests of 2024 showcased how digital platforms can influence and facilitate mass movements. This case study focuses on the role of social media in the EndBadGovernance protest, specifically among students at the University of Lagos, a significant demographic in the protest movement. Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp have transformed how information is disseminated and how people organize and participate in protests. They offer a space for real-time communication, mobilization, and solidarity, which is particularly significant in a country like Nigeria, where traditional media may be limited or controlled.

As a major educational institution in Nigeria, the University of Lagos has been a significant site of activism and protest. The involvement of its students in the EndBadGovernance protests highlights the role of social media in mobilizing youth and influencing the dynamics of the protest movement. This study aims to examine how social media was used by University of Lagos students to participate in and influence the EndBadGovernance protests, exploring the platforms, strategies, and impacts of their online activities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While social media's role in protest movements is widely acknowledged, there is a need to specifically analyze how it was utilized by students at the University of Lagos during the EndBadGovernance protests. The problem addressed by this study is the lack of detailed understanding of the specific ways in which social media influenced student engagement and the overall dynamics of the protest.

This study seeks to provide insights into the effectiveness of social media in mobilizing and organizing students, as well as its impact on the protest movement as a whole.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the use of social media platforms by University of Lagos students during the EndBadGovernance protests.
  2. To assess the impact of social media on student participation and organization in the protests.
  3. To evaluate the role of social media in shaping public discourse and influencing the outcomes of the EndBadGovernance protests.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How did University of Lagos students utilize social media platforms during the EndBadGovernance protests?
  2. What impact did social media have on the level of student participation and organization in the protests?
  3. In what ways did social media influence public discourse and the overall outcomes of the EndBadGovernance protests?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides a detailed examination of the role of social media in a contemporary protest movement, focusing on a specific demographic—University of Lagos students. Understanding how social media was used can offer valuable insights into the strategies employed by activists and the effectiveness of digital platforms in modern protest movements.

The findings will be useful for academics, activists, and policymakers interested in the intersection of social media and political activism, offering lessons on how digital tools can be harnessed for social change.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The scope of this study includes an analysis of social media use among University of Lagos students during the EndBadGovernance protests. It covers the platforms used, the nature of online activities, and the impact on student participation and public discourse.

The study is delimited by its focus on a specific institution and demographic, excluding other universities or groups involved in the protests. It relies on secondary data sources such as social media posts, media reports, and academic literature, and does not involve primary data collection or interviews with students.
